Workshop Leaders

Building Bridges: The role of a middle leader

Stuart Welsh @maths180

Teaching can be tough at times and ‘leading from the middle’ in a school comes with considerable challenges. Drawing on his own experience, Stuart will take a close look at the crucial role of the middle leader. In particular, Stuart will challenge us to consider which elements of the role are most important and why. Stuart will discuss which of our actions really make a difference and why we might be spending too much time and energy on the wrong things.

Three big ideas

Jonathan Hall @StudyMaths

Embedding consistent models and representations across your department is a powerful strategy that supports a successful and coherent mathematical education for pupils.

Ratio tables, area models and prime factors are three big ideas that can be used consistently throughout the mathematics curriculum.

After introducing us to these powerful ideas, Jonny will highlight where and when each can be revisited as a pupil progresses throughout their mathematical journey, each time strengthening and creating new connections between what are often considered different areas of maths.

Higher Applications of Mathematics - An Introduction

Michael Allan @mrallanmaths

In this session, Michael will introduce you to the content of this course and give some examples of the skills that are to be taught. We will build some mathematical models that could be used in the course and will delve into some of the statistical analysis work using R Studio. We will spend time with Excel and see how it is used in the Finance part of the course. Michael will demonstrate how the precedence tables part of the N5 course evolves into the Planning and Decision Making part of the Higher course. We will also look at some examples of the Project that must be completed by students.

Improving attainment at Level 5

Leanne Simpson @mrssimpsonmaths

In this session, we will look at ensuring the BGE experience prepares young people for both maths and applications pathways and how these can work together to improve engagement and attainment.

TUTOR and the Eildon West Learning Community

Gillian McColm

In this session, Gillian will explain how and why the Eildon West Learning Community in the Scottish Borders has incorporated TUTOR from Complete Mathematics into their maths provision and the impact this has had on teachers and learners.

CLASSROOM and St Augustine’s High School

Fraser Seywright

In this session, Fraser will explain how the mathematics department at St Augustine’s High School in Edinburgh makes use of CLASSROOM from Complete Mathematics to help teachers plan, teach and assess, and discuss the impact this has had.
